Working Backwards: Insights, Stories, and Secrets from Inside Amazon

Read the original ↗

Summary

Bryar (Jeff Bezos’s shadow for two years) and Carr (who built Amazon’s digital media business) describe Amazon’s internal mechanisms: the PR/FAQ document, the six-page narrative memo, the bar raiser hiring process, and the leadership principles. The PR/FAQ chapter is the core: before building anything, write the press release announcing the finished product — customer problem, solution, quote from a satisfied customer — then answer the hard questions in an FAQ. If the press release doesn’t excite you, don’t build it.

What it means for our work

This book is why PR/FAQ exists. The plugin implements the Working Backwards process inside Claude Code — generating the press release, internal and external FAQs, four-risks assessment, and feature appendix. The key insight we automated: the PR/FAQ isn’t just a document, it’s a decision tool. The simulated review meeting (/prfaq meeting) stress-tests the document the same way Amazon leadership meetings stress-test six-pagers. If the document can’t survive four skeptical personas, the product idea needs more work.
